I am writing to introduce myself to you as the successor to Daniel Soderman in the position of General Secretary of PRIMET.
I am an independent Meteorological Consultant with a long career behind me in operational meteorology (28 years with the UK Met Office), commercial meteorology (13 years as the Managing Director of the UK operations of Vaisala) and in the administration of the Royal Meteorological Society (for whom I have recently completed eight years as the Executive Director). I have accepted the role of General Secretary of PRIMET on a part time basis for a six-month period in the first instance. The Board of PRIMET and I hope that in that time we can put PRIMET into a more vigorous mode of operation and establish a basis on which the organisation can grow and become stronger.
But this cannot be done without your active support and co-operation. Among my first tasks will be to up-date the PRIMET membership records and contacts lists and to generate a questionnaire that I hope will provide me with a picture of the significant issues that you are facing as you operate in a highly competitive market dominated by a few large, often government-owned or sponsored players. From this we hope to be able to develop a way forward to addressing some of these issues.
